Cal Poly Pomona Students Learn the Importance of Leadership with IEEE

Our Cal Poly Pomona IEEE student branch chapter hosted 2015's SPAx, or Student Professional Awareness Experience, to spread the importance of leadership on November 14, 2015. This is one of our most popular professional development opportunities that focuses on soft skills to help expand the competitive curve of Cal Poly Pomona's engineering students as professionals in their desired industry.

Jonathan Chew, who is a Project Coordinator at Walt Disney Imagineering, was invited back to present on the importance of leadership anywhere, anytime whether it be on the job, at school, or even around peers.

About 49 students attended, 13 of which were IEEE members, including 1 recent IEEE & CPP grad, and the other 36 being Cal Poly Pomona students representing some other engineering  majors, such as Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering Technology, and even Computer Science.

Overall, the day was filled with interactive events where students were provided the experiences and opportunities to develop their soft skills, including a behavioral styles workshop in which students got into groups sorted by their behavioral styles and presented in front of the entire audience on how they would solve challenges like increasing recruitment for IEEE members or spreading awareness & interest in STEM fields for elementary-level school children.

IEEE - Cal Poly Pomona would like to give its biggest thanks to its participants and industry supporters, including the IEEE Foothill Section, IEEE Region 6, and Northrop Grumman Corporation.
